Spring Retreat

We just finished our Spring Retreat last weekend. It was a lot of fun and it provided much needed momentum for our students at the middle of the semester. We had 20 guys and 16 girls from Western go to the Spring Retreat and 12 of those 20 guys shaved their heads into Mohawks in a unifying demonstration of masculinity and comraderie. Thats right in the picture to the left, I have a Mohawk. The one haircut I said I would never ever have. But hey, if it is for the sake of the gospel I will do it. 1 Corinthians 9:18-24 is my biblical evidence. All this to say the Mohawks were a great thing for our ministry, it unified lots of our men and created common ground among guys who don't always have common ground. The speaker on the retreat was Andrew Holbrook, who is on staff with Campus Outreach Charlotte. His talks were very challenging to our students. He began on Friday night speaking from Psalm 50 about he magnitude of our God, paintin a picture for us that God is more powerful than we often think. Saturday morning he spoke from Psalm 24, and it was amazing. In it the psalmist asks a question, "Who may ascend the hill of the Lord?" Which basically means, who can come before the presence of God? The answer the psalmist gives is "he who has clean hands and a pure heart." So Andrew spoke about what it means to have clean hands and a pure heart, giving examples of how easy it is for students today to think they have clean hands and pure hearts but really they are missing it. This can rob someone of experiencing the presence of God. Saturday evening, Andrew spoke from Psalm 67. This talk was aimed at understanding to what God is calling us. Lots of our students said it was really challenging because it increased their vision for their own life and the possibilites of their life having purpose by influencing many people.
